MUSKOKA MAP (MAP OF MUSKOKA)
(TOURISM IN MUSKOKA, MUSKOKA TOURISM, MUSKOKA TOURIST INFORMATION)
One of our Ontario Attraction Maps, The Muskoka Region is known and loved for its lakes and waterways that are naturally surrounded by majestic Canadian-Shield Granite rock. The main large lakes consist of Lake Muskoka, Lake Joseph and Lake Rosseau. Pine and Maple Trees decorate this beautiful land giving the local and visitor the experience of unspoiled nature at its best. The historical towns have kept much of the character of a time passed, while offering the conveniences of the modern day. Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Port Carling, Bala and Rosseau each offer distinct historical sites, activities and attractions to be experienced during all four seasons of the year.
Gravenhurst has just launched the new Muskoka Wharf project, keeping with the theme of remembering and honouring the past while moving toward new commerce of the future. The Muskoka Wharf offers many attractions, shops, restaurants, and activities for the entire family. It is also the site of the Heritage Museum called “Grace and Speed” which offers visitors a glimpse of the past, with interactive displays highlighting boating and the famous hotels, like the Windemere, that brought visitors to the area over 130 years ago. From the Muskoka Wharf visitors can also enjoy the famous boat cruises of Lake Muskoka known as, Segwun, Wanda III and Wenonah II. The Wharf area as well as the shops and attractions of downtown Gravenhurst are sure to keep visitors entertained for their entire stay. For any other information see the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce.
Bracebridge, also known as the heart of Muskoka has also been visited by tourists from around the globe for over 130 years. Visitors would make their way by train on the route from Toronto to Cochrane. The Muskoka Rails Museum is dedicated to the memory of how the towns of Muskoka became known as the place to “cottage” or vacation, out of the city. Bracebridge has over 22 waterfalls to experience. The town was actually known as North Falls, until renamed by the Postmaster in 1864. Although the rail service was ended in the 1980’s, The Polar Bear Express, Ontario Northland has recently been introduced once again and operates a weekly schedule from Toronto. For any other information see the Bracebridge Chamber of Commerce.
Port Carling, the hub or central town of the lakes, is the oldest town. Port Carling was once called Obajewanung (or Obogawanung) which means "meeting place". Originally inhabited by natives who moved to Parry Island, Port Carling was incorporated as a village in 1896. The town has many boutiques and restaurants for visitors to enjoy. A new community hall provides a venue for theatre and musical events. The newly built Port Carling Library, serves as the main branch of five for all of the Muskoka Lakes. For any other information see the Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce.
Bala sits at the top of three islands where Muskoka Lake runs into the Moon River via two waterfalls. Bala was named after the Lake District in Wales by Thomas Burgess in 1868. The Burgess family set up a saw mill on the Mill Stream and eventually opened a general store, bakeshop, blacksmith shop, supply boat service and post office. Bala became an offical town in 1914 and the grandson of Thomas Burgess was the first Mayor. Bala is known today for its historic music theatre, the Kee to Bala and for the famous annual Cranberry Festival. The Bala Museum is famous for its tribute to Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of "Anne of Green Gables". For any other information see the Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce.
MacTier was originally called Muskoka Station because it was used by Candian Pacific Railway as a point where trains switched to and from their northern and southern destinations. The name was changed by a Post Office Store owner due to the town being confused with Muskoka Wharf and Muskoka Falls. He named the town MacTier after A.D. MacTier, the General Superintendent of the eastern division of the Canadian Pacific Railway. For current information about the town you can contact the Southeast Georgian Bay Chamber of Commerce or the Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce.
Rosseau the town, is at the northern tip of Lake Rosseau. It has many arts and crafts stores and a general store that has been around since the late 1800's. The town hosts a fall fair in late August.
This Interactive Online Vacation Map covers the area from MacTier east toward Bracebridge and Huntsville and north from the town of Rosseau to Gravenhurst in the south.
